Talk to a Vet

Chat with a licensed veterinary professional, one to one.

Information only. A licensed veterinary professional reads what you write and replies in writing. Nobody examines your animal here, so there is no diagnosis and no prescription. When in doubt, see a vet in person, and if you think it is an emergency, call an emergency vet.

Veterinary assistant

Welcome. What is going on with your pet?

Licensing rules differ by state, so pick the state your animal is in first.

The assistant writes up your case. Nothing is charged while you are answering questions, and if this looks like an emergency we will say so and send you to a clinic instead.

Ask a vet. Get answers without the waiting room.

Licensed veterinary professionals read what you write and reply by chat, with their name and license on every message.

How the chat works

An assistant collects the details first, so the professional who reads your case starts with the facts rather than with twenty questions. Then a licensed veterinary professional claims your case and replies in the same thread, under their own name and license. You can reply, add a photo, and come back with follow-up questions for a week.

The person answering is licensed in a US state and you can check that license with the state board yourself. What you get is their general guidance in writing, which is also what it is not: no examination, no diagnosis, no prescription, and no promise that a message replaces being seen.

Ask a vet

How it works

  1. 1

    Describe what is going on

Type it the way you would say it. The assistant asks a few short questions and collects the details a professional needs.

  2. 2

A licensed professional reads it and replies by chat

You are told the moment a professional picks it up, and the whole on-call rota is paged if nobody has within three minutes. You see their name, credential and license on every message.

  3. 3

Keep the written summary and follow up

Your case summary is yours to keep, and the thread stays open for follow-up questions for seven days.

Common questions

Is this a diagnosis?

No. A licensed professional reads what you write and gives you general guidance, in writing. Nobody examines your animal, so nobody can diagnose it. If what you describe needs to be looked at in person, we say so plainly and tell you where to go.

Can they prescribe anything?

No. Nothing you read here is a prescription or a dose. Medication comes from a clinic that has examined your pet. What a professional here can do is give general information in writing, and suggest in-person care when it may be needed.

What happens if it is an emergency?

The assistant checks for emergency signs before anything else. If what you describe looks like one, you are told to go to a clinic now. No price is shown on that screen and nothing is charged.

Who are the professionals?

Licensed veterinarians. Nobody signs themselves up: an administrator checks each license against the state board's own lookup before the person can take a case, and every reply carries their name and license state.

Which states do you serve?

Most of the United States. We cannot take questions from Texas, North Carolina, Alabama or Minnesota. A few states require the professional who answers to hold a license in that state; you choose the state your animal is in before you start, and the assistant tells you if that applies to you, before anything is charged. See where we can answer, state by state.

What does it cost?

You see the full price before you type a card number, including everything charged that day and anything that recurs. Nothing is charged while you are answering the assistant's questions, and if what you describe looks like an emergency you are sent to a clinic and never shown a price at all.

Is a membership unlimited?

A membership is yours, and it covers the animals in your own home. You can start a new conversation any time one of them worries you, and asking twice beats sitting up worrying. There is no cap on how many. What it is not is a shared login, something to resell, or a way to put a clinic's caseload or a whole street's questions through one account. Our fair use policy is short, and it says plainly where that line sits and what happens if we ever think a membership has gone past it, starting with us writing to you. Read the fair use policy.

How do I cancel?

From your account page, in one step, at any time, without speaking to anyone. We email you before every renewal.
